The Care Quality Commission (CQC) was created in October 2008 and began operating on the 1st April 2009.

Until 31st March 2009 regulation of health and Adult Social Care in England was carried out by the Healthcare Commission and the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) along with the Mental Heath Act Commission, monitoring functions with regards to the Mental Health Act.

The CQC was formed as a single integrated regulator to replace these three bodies.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of all health and adult social care regulating health and adult social care services in England, whether they're provided by the NHS, local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations and, protects the rights of people detained under the Mental Health Act.
